I coin new phrases all the time. I'm no Shakespeare, but I'm damn prolific in creating idioms and portmanteaus. Sometimes they stick and become part of the lexicon of my friends and colleagues, sometimes not so much. Here are some of the types of words* and phrases I invented this weekend:
1- Creation of unnecessary acronyms (CUA)
Description: I hope this is self-explanatory. I make up silly acronyms all the time.
Example: Ennui Refractory Period (ERP) The amount of time it takes to bounce back from a melancholy activity.
Lux's note: I posted this new term as a comment in a BB fic yesterday, but it is so awesome it needs a post of its own.
2- Transnomen Ad Absurdum
Description: Taking a phrase and title and distilling it down to a shorter, snarky one.
Example: I'm going to sit down and try and watch "The Legend of the Legendary Heroes" this afternoon. If I like it, I shall rename it as.... "Repetition of the Redundancies"
3- Si in dubio, narro Antiquus Grai**
Description: when I take a term and make an ancient greek phrase to make it seem more interesting
Example: Deus ex pharmakos
* I even invented silly categories and nomenclature for my silly phrases and
** Yes, I just created a phrase about making up new Greek phrases in Latin. Yes, I'm the only one who finds that funny.
